My coming OUT at work story
I truly did not come out at work until I finished a book by Kirk Snyder called The Lavender Road to Success. The information in the book inspired me not only to come out in the job I had at the time at Chemonics International, but to create a conference that would help Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally college students transition from academia to the workplace. Five years later, that conference is now just one resource that OUT for Work offers.
Advice to students
I have been closeted, and I have been out and open in the workplace. It's a personal choice. However, when you consider how much time we spend at work, with our coworkers, not being able to share the simple things like what you did over the weekend or who you spent Valentine's Day with can really impact other aspects of your life, even work. |
